Do you remember the huge gold frames my Mom and Aunts found in North Carolina for me?
If not, here is my post on the one above – Large Vintage Frame Turned Chalkboard – that I turned into a chalkboard for my dining room.
Well, they also found an even larger frame while shopping garage sales. My Mom asked if I would redesign it into a pin board for her dining room and I was so excited to start that I forgot to take a before photo. (Bad blogger.) But it looked gold and gaudy like the one above.
I cleaned it with a toothbrush and mineral spirits. I painted a coat of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Aubusson Blue, distressed it a bit and then dry brushed some Annie Sloan Coco and Old White.
But, this didn’t feel right to me so I went back and added a wash of Annie Sloan Duck Egg Blue. A wash is adding some water to the chalk paint, painting it on and wiping it off until you get the look you want. That was just what this frame needed to work with the colors in my mom’s dining room and adjoining living room. You can still see the darker Aubusson Blue coming through and the touches of Old White and Coco, but the overall effect is subtle and still feels aged.
To make the pin board, I added a roll of cork to hardboard with spray adhesive. I covered the cork with linen fabric by stapling to the back. If you recall, the other large frame fell off my wall because I didn’t rewire the hanging on the back. This time, I did.
I am IN LOVE with this redesigned frame. My pictures don’t do it justice. It looks lovely in my Mom’s home and adds so much color and character to the space.
And it gives her a beautiful place to display photos of her favorite Granddaughter along with invitations, cards and other mementos.
The photos of my daughter are from sessions with my friends and fellow business women – Christie Adams Photography and Abigail Thomas Photography. Please do check out their beautiful work!
I’ll be back next week with another vintage find…redesigned!

If you like this blue, you might like to take a look at this blanket chest I painted last year in a custom blue.

This is so gorgeous! Sharing tomorrow at Inspiration Friday! Thanks so much for linking up!
absolutely beautiful…you have given me inspiration to tackle a new project. Thank you
You are very welcome! I love finding inspiration in others work too!
We are looking for a large frame such as the two you have pictures here. Actually looking for either gold or the vintage gray blue shades. Are either of these or something similar for sale. Maybe point us in the right direction of not?
Hello! These two frames are spoken for and were found at garage sales in North Carolina. They are difficult and sometimes expensive to come by. I can only suggest looking on ebay, craigslist, and garage and estate sales. Happy hunting! – Kristin
What are the measurements if ghe frames? What did you do with the original paintings?
Hi! These frames we found were about 2 feet by 4 feet! I painted over or covered the original paintings! Thanks for following my work!
