I saw this pair of vintage barrel back cane chairs at an estate sale and I had to have them! I loved the caning and the detail on the backs. They were solid, comfortable and amazing… just out dated.
I redesigned them using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Grey. Hand waxed with Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax and finished with distressing. The seat cushions are also painted and waxed. Did you know Annie’s paint covers fabric?! Well, it does! It is truly an amazing product.
I posted some teasers on these chairs on my Facebook page and one has already sold! Blog readers… be sure to also follow me on Facebook so you won’t miss the next piece for sale!
The buyer is going to use one of these chairs in her master bedroom. I also think this accent chair would be beautiful in a living room. Or in an entryway, sun room or guest room.

And for those of you that enjoy the before and afters… here is the before of these chairs.
Looks fantastic! I’m so glad I motivated you to finish it!
VERY cute!!! Did you “prime” the fabric with anything before you painted it? I have two barrel chairs I want to do similar but am concerned the fabric will feel “stiff” or “crunchy” if I just paint it. LOVE what you do with these pieces!!1
I wet the fabric with water and then used watered down paint. It took three light coats to cover. Then finished with Clear Wax by Annie Sloan! Good luck with yours!
Thanks. Did you brush the fabric in between coats of paint? I have read that it can get stiff and crunchy if it dries hard but that brushing will prevent that from happening. How did you keep it soft? LOVE the color too….
No. Watering it down and doing light coats keeps it from getting crunchy.
Fantastic!!! Thank you so much! I knew there was a great reason I enjoy reading your blog so much. 🙂
